Its technical name is unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), and one of the first recorded descriptions of it was in 1849, when the Austrian army was laying siege to Venice.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”2\/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]The details are sketchy, but the consensus is that the Austrians launched as many as 200 incendiary balloons\u2014a crude form of drone\u2014at the city.<\/p>\n

Alas, the wind changed direction. A few balloons found their target, but many drifted back in the direction of the Austrians.<\/p>\n

With most of today\u2019s UAVs\u2014as Julia Hildebrand, Ph.D.<\/a>, assistant professor of communication<\/a> at Eckerd College and author of the recently released tome Aerial Play: Drone Medium, Mobility, Communication and Culture<\/em><\/a>, can tell you\u2014that likely would not happen. The drones of the 21st century can perform anything from taking detailed aerial video to herding livestock. \u201cThey can avoid obstacles and even find their way back to where they started,\u201d Hildebrand adds.<\/p>\n

And yes, she says, in combat, drones still drop bombs. What\u2019s really interesting about consumer drones, Hildebrand says, is the personal connection we make with them.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\u201cThis technology has really made a jump in the last 10 to 20 years,\u201d says Hildebrand, who teaches courses in media ethics, media and society, and critical studies in new media. She also owns a drone. \u201cThey open up visuals so unlike what you get from a helicopter or an airplane. It\u2019s a new way of seeing and discovering the world. They\u2019re used for wildlife conservation, search and rescue, law enforcement \u2026 it\u2019s the drone as a helper.\u201d<\/p>\n

And as a toy, albeit an expensive one. A small toy drone with a simple camera can cost less than $100. But for more sophisticated flying, hobby pilots spend $450 and up. Throw in extra batteries, propellers, SD cards and other accessories, and the cost can rise to $1,500 or more.<\/p>\n

But that\u2019s not a deterrent. \u201cThere\u2019s a large arena of people flying drones for fun,\u201d Hildebrand says. \u201cThere is aerial photography and videography, and also drone racing, all of which are growing in popularity among men and women, young and old alike.\u201d<\/p>\n

For many pilots, these aren\u2019t just remote-controlled flying machines. Her book on the subject has been well received. \u201cThis is a welcomed contribution not only to studies on drones but also to our knowledge on human-machine interactions,\u201d says Bruno Martins, senior researcher at the Peace Research Institute in Oslo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Like owning a dog or cat, people develop relationships with their drones, Hildebrand says. They talk to them, praise or admonish them. Even give them a name. (She named her drone \u201cJay,\u201d from the first letter of her first name.)<\/p>\n

Hildebrand decided to see how she connected with her drone, so she hooked up a microphone. \u201cI wanted to analyze myself as I engaged the technology,\u201d she says, \u201cso I recorded my audio and I thought out loud, said anything that came to mind. I thought that would make for really interesting data.\u201d It did.<\/p>\n

\u201cI said things like, \u2018Let\u2019s go for a walk.\u2019 \u2018Come on home.\u2019 \u2018You\u2019ve been a good boy today.\u2019 It feels like the drone is a pet, a friend, a co-photographer. It\u2019s a mobile companionship.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hildebrand says other technology, like robot vacuums, can have a similar effect on people, but usually not as profound.<\/p>\n

And yes, Hildebrand says, one of the notable downsides to drones has to do with ethics. \u201cWe hear stories about drones being used as sort of a Peeping Tom, looking into backyards and windows,\u201d Hildebrand says. \u201cAnd even drones off the shelf can be weaponized.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt the same time, we have other technology much more invasive in terms of privacy, like Amazon\u2019s Alexa or Apple\u2019s Siri. But more importantly, the vast majority of drone owners care much more about the amazing sunset they\u2019re recording or that stunning shot of the city skyline.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joe Salcedo, a junior communication major from New London, Connecticut, has been piloting increasingly sophisticated drones for the last seven years.
