It all started with a little harmless eavesdropping.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”2\/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Ever since she was a child, Jessica Leffers, Ph.D.<\/a>, assistant professor of psychology<\/a> at Eckerd College, was curious about human behavior. \u201cMy parents would put me to bed, and I\u2019d sneak out and listen to the grown-ups talking,\u201d she says. \u201cI just loved thinking about why people behave the way they do.\u201d<\/h3>\n

It was her first research project. She was around 5 or six, and she was on her way.<\/p>\n

Leffers, who is three months into her first year of teaching at Eckerd, grew up just north of Washington, D.C., in Germantown, Maryland. Her father is from Virginia, and her mother from India. They met while they were working at a biotech lab in Washington.<\/p>\n

Leffers earned her bachelor\u2019s degree from Goucher College in Baltimore, where she was a key member of the women\u2019s soccer team. She earned her master\u2019s and doctorate degrees from Northeastern University in Boston.<\/p>\n

Among the courses she teaches are Introduction to Psychology, Research Methods, and Human Learning and Cognition. Her research interests center around how people think and organize what they know about social categories like race, religion and gender. Her studies include both children and adults and investigate how cognitive biases play a role in the way people process information, remember others and make decisions regarding social others.<\/p>\n

Like her fellow faculty members who studied at smaller universities, Leffers found Eckerd a perfect fit. With the help of a little paperback book.<\/p>\n

\u201cI knew I wanted to be in a small, quirky liberal arts school,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I did not want to live in Florida because I\u2019d be too far from my family. I also noticed that Goucher is on the list in the book Colleges That Change Lives<\/em>, and so is Eckerd<\/a>.\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]One of the first things she did after arriving in August? \u201cMy mom and I went to Doc Ford\u2019s [on the St. Pete Pier<\/a>] and we got the peel-and-eat shrimp.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since then, her colleagues and the Eckerd staff have welcomed her and made her feel at home, she says. \u201cWhen I first got here, sometimes I\u2019d just walk around with my map in my hands. I love the campus.\u201d<\/p>\n

As for her students, she says they are \u201cpretty much what I expected. They\u2019re really engaged and care a lot about their learning and not just their grades. I\u2019m really excited to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her students are pretty happy about it too. Kerri Olzewski, a senior psychology and animal studies<\/a> student from Wadsworth, Illinois, is one of Leffers\u2019s students and was part of a group of psychology majors that interviewed her last winter. \u201cWe asked about her research, heard her lecture and listened to her teaching style,\u201d Kerri says. \u201cI remembered Dr. Leffers from that group and how much I really enjoyed her presentation.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen she\u2019s talking about things like human learning and cognition, you can really tell she enjoys what she\u2019s teaching. We\u2019re learning about learning, and it\u2019s not just a PowerPoint presentation on a screen.
