Imagine a campus that sells only reusables, prohibits the purchase of single-use plastics and thrives on a low-waste, environmentally friendly culture. This is the Eckerd College that Natalie McKenna and Chloe McKenna (no relation) are working toward.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Chloe, a junior environmental studies<\/a> and animal studies<\/a> student from Yorba Linda, California, and Natalie, a marine science<\/a> and environmental studies student from Ontario, New York, are members of one of Eckerd\u2019s most influential clubs: the Florida Public Interest Research Group Students<\/a> (PIRG). PIRG is involved in student activism on every level\u2014starting campaigns to end hunger, registering students to vote and advocating for environmentalism on campus. Right now, Natalie and Chloe are heading up one of PIRG\u2019s most ambitious efforts yet, the Zero Waste Campaign.<\/h3>\n

Already, Eckerd College runs a Trash 2 Treasure recycling program<\/a>, where first-year students are invited to purchase used and refurbished dorm necessities when they arrive, and implements the Break Free From Plastic Pledge<\/a>, which prohibits the purchase of nonessential single-use plastics with College funds. Natalie and Chloe have an idea to take things further.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re really trying to work toward an ideal future where everything on campus is based in sustainability and zero-waste culture,\u201d Natalie says. Their main goal for this new campaign is a low-waste bulk station in the Triton\u2019s Pub<\/a>. This bulk station will provide sustainable household products, giving students a place on campus to buy eco-friendly items cheaply and reducing Eckerd\u2019s plastic waste by a huge margin.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” el_class=”lg_text” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Zero-waste-lifestyle students can currently find bulk stores in St. Petersburg, and the Reduce Single Use at Eckerd College offers workshops on making your own reusables, but a bulk store on campus would be an institutional commitment to the principle.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Break Free From Plastic \u201cwas a huge win for PIRG and the other groups that worked on it, but we know that there\u2019s more that we need to do on campus,\u201d Chloe explains. In November, PIRG also ran a Climate Carnival, which focused on different types of renewable energy and their effects on climate change. Faculty and students gave speeches and played games. This carnival partnered with other clubs on campus, like the campus radio station, WECX<\/a>, whose hosts played music and assisted with student testimonials.<\/span><\/p>\n

In fact, PIRG has worked with almost every department at Eckerd, from Residence Life to Admission. Chloe and Natalie\u2019s main contact, however, has been Evan Bollier \u201911, the College\u2019s director of sustainability. He has headed the Office of Sustainability<\/a> since 2011 and works on initiatives run by students and administration alike. Natalie and Chloe say collaborating with College administration has been a smooth process. \u201cPIRG has worked with Evan a lot before the Break Free From Plastic [Eckerd College Pledge] \u2026 we\u2019re really thankful that we have allies in those groups on campus.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
