Are political views a deal-breaker when it comes to dating? Can being a serious fan of Fox News or CNN spell the end of a beautiful relationship before it\u2019s even begun?<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]That was the premise of \u201cPolitical Opposites Do Not Attract,\u201d a 2018 research paper co-authored by new Eckerd College faculty member Stephanie Mallinas, Ph.D., assistant professor of psychology<\/a>. This isn\u2019t like an Army-Navy football game, where no matter how intense the rivalry, both sides come together after the game.<\/p>\n

\u201cUsing potential mates as targets,\u201d the study\u2019s conclusion points out, \u201cwe found that participants liked targets less, were less romantically interested in targets, and rated targets as less attractive after discovering political dissimilarity with them. Further, they became more uncomfortable with targets after discovering ideological dissimilarity.\u201d<\/p>\n

After growing up in Glen Rock, New Jersey, a small town about 45 minutes north of Manhattan, she earned her Ph.D. at Florida State University and served as a graduate teaching assistant. Then she set her sights on Eckerd College.<\/p>\n

\u201cEckerd is more similar to where I got my undergraduate degree, The College of New Jersey, which is a small public liberal arts college,\u201d she says. \u201cI wanted to teach and do research and focus on undergraduates. With smaller classes, I can get to know my students a little better.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” el_class=”lg_text” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\u201cAnd many smaller liberal arts colleges are in small towns, and that\u2019s fine. But I was really looking for a liberal arts college in an urban area. Her research examines how ideological and moral beliefs influence prejudice, stereotyping and other forms of social judgment.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cEverything is going really well so far,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m settling into St. Pete<\/a>, and Eckerd is such a welcoming college. The students are very engaged. It\u2019s been nice to have conversations with them and hear their thoughts.\u201d<\/p>\n

Speaking of being engaged, Mallinas is. She and her fianc\u00e9 are planning an April wedding on Treasure Island. And yes, they validate the research.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy fianc\u00e9 and I have pretty similar political views,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s not impossible for people with differing views to be in a relationship, but values are an important part of people\u2019s identity, and we like it when people validate our views, so having a partner with similar political beliefs can affirm our own beliefs and identities.<\/p>\n

\u201cConflict is also inevitable in any relationship, so having similar political beliefs might make it so that there\u2019s one less potential source of conflict among partners.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
