Wedded alumni Jesse Turtle \u201991 and Mila Turtle \u201990, parents of a 2018 Eckerd graduate, strode to the stage at Jannus Live<\/a> on Nov. 4 to accept a ceramic cheeseburger plaque recognizing Eckerd College as a Good \u2019Burger\u2014an organization \u201cin greater St. Pete making a positive impact in our community,\u201d according to the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce<\/a>.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\u201cIt was appropriate to have the Turtles accept on our behalf because they are indicative of what a lot of people don\u2019t appreciate about Eckerd College,\u201d says Kelly Kirschner, Vice President and Dean of the Division of Executive and Continuing Education. \u201cPeople see that Eckerd brings a lot of students to the area from around the world, but, like the Turtles, some of them stay and join the workforce or open businesses in St. Petersburg.\u201d<\/p>\n

The annual Good \u2019Burger Awards<\/a> hosted by the St. Petersburg Chamber of Commerce lets residents nominate local businesses, organizations and individuals that do good things for the community in various categories and then select the winners through an online poll, says Courtney Smith, the former Events, Leadership and Workforce Development Manager at the chamber. Voting is limited to one vote per IP address, and the chamber strives to get 10,000 votes per year, she adds. Eckerd won its award in the category Cool Company: Large for the 2021 cycle. Even though Kirschner serves as a voting member of the Chamber Board of Governors<\/a> and the College is a sponsor of the awards, Smith says those factors had no bearing on the winners.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s completely community-driven, so it isn\u2019t the chamber saying that [you\u2019re good]; it\u2019s the community,\u201d Smith says.<\/p>\n

Since its founding in 1958, Eckerd College has grown to serve 2,017 students with 414 faculty and staff on its 188-acre waterfront campus in South St. Petersburg. In 2016, Eckerd had an estimated $371 million economic impact on St. Petersburg and $557 million in the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cGreat communities have thriving businesses that are supplied with talent from great educational institutions,\u201d Kirschner says. \u201cThis community recognition affirms our importance in the ecosystem and why we are a \u2018cool company.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Smith concurs. In October, she left the chamber to join Eckerd as the new Executive Director of Continuing Education\u2014managing summer school<\/a>, conferences<\/a>, Pre-College Programs<\/a> and more.<\/p>\n
