Laura Wetzel, Ph.D.<\/a>, professor of marine science<\/a> and geosciences<\/a>, had to turn students away after her Science of Seafaring Winter Term class quickly filled. Today we talked about tides. Next week, currents. And there is homework.\u201d For their final project, the students have to describe a historic research ship, such as Charles Darwin\u2019s HMS Beagle<\/em>, and how it advanced science and technology.<\/p>\n

A January tradition<\/a> at Eckerd that usually sends professors and students to study abroad, this year\u2019s Winter Term<\/a> extends from Jan. 4 to Jan. 28 and will keep our global learners on home ground, safer from the pandemic and travel restrictions. But if there is an ideal place to think outside, this is it. There are no prerequisites, everyone can focus on a single topic, and students can fulfill an academic-area requirement.<\/p>\n

There are 1,316 students enrolled in Winter Term courses this year, according to Eckerd College Registrar Laura Raymond. This includes 1,155 students participating in the 60 regular Winter Term courses; 139 students enrolled in their senior comprehensive exams, thesis or projects; and 22 students who are doing an independent study or internship. Typically about half the students have a business- or management-related major.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ava McLeod\u2014president of the Eckerd College Organization of Students<\/a> (ECOS) and a junior marine science and French<\/a> student from Wylie, Texas, who is taking Singleton\u2019s course\u2014says she has no problem tackling a college-level course in a three-and-a-half-week time frame. \u201cIt seems like it would be an awful and disastrous idea,\u201d she says. \u201cBut for my class, I feel like it is the appropriate length. We aren\u2019t covering topics too quickly, especially because a lot of the material that we\u2019re learning overlaps. So I feel like taking this course in a three-week period avoids unnecessary repetition of materials, and it ensures that we are actually getting work done.\u201d<\/p>\n

Examining the contexts that created superheroes, and how they have changed, will allow us to critically evaluate changing and current perspectives on topics like gender, race, class and justice.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\u201cIt\u2019s a discussion-based class,\u201d Maier adds. \u201cI do a little bit of lecturing, then mostly it\u2019s small group discussions, and then we come together and we tackle the issues.\u201d Maier\u2019s class was capped at 20, but because demand was so high, he raised it to 25. \u201cThis is a good example of a course you wouldn\u2019t normally get elsewhere,\u201d he says, \u201cand you don\u2019t have to go anywhere to take it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWinter Term is ideal for an experiential course,\u201d says Peter Hammerschmidt, Ph.D.<\/a>, professor of economics<\/a>, who is teaching Negotiating Effectively this Winter Term. \u201cThe students practice effective negotiation behaviors while reducing the less effective behaviors. We videotape them role-playing real situations. And because I have the students every day, there\u2019s not much loss of learning from one day to the next.\u201d<\/p>\n

Comedy and Laughter, a course taught by Cynthia Totten, Ph.D,<\/a> professor of theatre<\/a>, explores why we laugh; what happens to the body when we laugh; and what makes a character, an action or a situation funny. \u201cThe goal is to explore the principles of comedy and laughter and apply it to performance,\u201d Totten says. \u201cToday the students did a silent movie scene to see the physical humor and sight gags, and to try to explore that physicality.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI absolutely love the class because it\u2019s all about play and having fun with each other,\u201d says Soph Sawyer, a senior interdisciplinary arts<\/a> student from Naples, Florida. \u201cDr. Totten is such an excellent professor because she establishes immediately that you can\u2019t possibly embarrass yourself with whatever you do.
