Eckerd College senior Jayden Jech was only about 9 at the time, but even now, more than a decade later, he can still recall the smallest details.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_direction_desktop=”default” column_element_spacing=”default” desktop_text_alignment=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_backdrop_filter=”none” column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”2\/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\u201cI remember setting up bird feeders outside and sitting on our kitchen counter and recording the different birds that came by,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s what I asked for, for Christmas. Birdseed. And this was Minnesota, so I had a heated bath for the birds.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pauses a moment and chuckles. \u201cMy nickname is \u2018Bird,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cI had that before I started working with birds. I have a great photo of me and my dad paddling a canoe on the Mississippi. The Audubon Society was banding adult bald eagles, and we had to hold an eaglet as the scientists were completing the banding process.\u201d<\/p>\n

A biology<\/a> and environmental studies<\/a> student from Red Wing, Minnesota, Jayden faced a choice as his high school graduation approached. Would he choose a college in Minnesota, or would he be the first in his family to attend an institution outside the state? His father was director of a nearby environmental learning center, Minnesota is where he discovered his interest in birds and, as Jayden proudly points out, Red Wing is home to the world\u2019s largest boot (a size 638-D, 16-foot-tall, leather tribute to the town\u2019s century-old footwear company)<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I remember knowing I wanted to be near the water and explore a place I\u2019ve never been before,\u201d Jayden says. \u201cSomewhere completely different. I had never been to Florida, but when I looked at Eckerd College and its \u2018ThinkOutside\u2019 philosophy, I thought it would be the perfect spot.\u201d<\/p>\n

His parents thought so too. They helped him move in.<\/p>\n

\u201cI remember on my freshman tour seeing manatees in Frenchman\u2019s Creek and pelicans flying over South Beach<\/a>,\u201d he says. \u201cI knew I had to get involved, so I started volunteering on another student\u2019s thesis about working with injured seabirds. Last summer he worked as a field biologist at the Loon Preservation Committee<\/a> in New Hampshire.<\/p>\n

He\u2019s also an Eckerd tour guide, a teaching assistant, and he leads the Eckerd College Save Our Seabirds Club<\/a>. \u201cYou never know when you\u2019re going to get a call,\u201d he says. \u201cBut fortunately, we have other student volunteers and we work with other nonprofits.\u201d<\/p>\n

Although his schedule is packed, he wouldn\u2019t have it any other way. \u201cJayden immerses himself in the community he\u2019s in,\u201d says Sarah Duncan, Ph.D.<\/a>, assistant professor of biology<\/a>, who is Jayden\u2019s mentor. \u201cHe stood out to me from the beginning because he was looking for opportunities and how he could get involved, and taking those extra steps that have led to his success.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jayden says that not only did Eckerd allow him to follow his passion, he could start his research almost immediately. \u201cMy first year,\u201d he says, \u201cI\u2019d only been here a couple months, and I ended up going with several other students on a Winter Term<\/a> trip to Thailand with Dr. [Jeff] Felardo<\/a> [associate professor of economics<\/a>]. We did volunteer work at an elephant sanctuary. That\u2019s amazing for a first-year student.<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of my friends ended up staying close to home,\u201d he adds. \u201cThat wasn\u2019t in my cards.
