As laughter erupts, Phineas, a sophomore film studies<\/a> and creative writing<\/a> student at Eckerd College, soaks in the rewards of their first professional acting performance\u2014a role in School Girls: Or; The African Mean Girls Play<\/em> at the American Stage Theatre<\/a> in St. Petersburg, Florida.<\/p>\n

Hawk gave Phineas the script and helped shoot an audition tape that featured the Brandon, Florida, native trying on a Ghanaian accent for the first time.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said that I should at least try it,\u201d Phineas recalls, \u201cbecause I might not get it right, and I don\u2019t think I did, but at least they\u2019ll get to see my effort.\u201d<\/p>\n

It worked. And two weeks later they were joining the cast of School Girls<\/em> for an intense month of rehearsals before opening night in February.<\/p>\n

Gifty is different from Phineas\u2019s past roles\u2014Corie in Neil Simon\u2019s Barefoot in the Park<\/em> and Sapphi Van Helsing in Dracula: The Vampire Strikes Back<\/em> at the St. Petersburg City Theatre<\/a>\u2014particularly because the story, by Jocelyn Bioh, is set at a West African boarding school with an all-Black cast. School Girls<\/em> focuses on the issue of cultural identity and colorism as a biracial American girl matriculates at the Aburi School in Ghana.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have always felt at odds with identity and how I find myself within my culture,\u201d Phineas explains. \u201cReading a play by a Black woman playwright exploring these themes was great. Now people of all cultures who see the show have a view of a subject not talked about in our own homes and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n

Since Phineas\u2019s very first role (as narrator in 101 Dalmations<\/em> at age 5), theatre has been present. While attending Tampa\u2019s Howard W. Blake High School as a theatre major, they were tasked with contacting schools to find out audition requirements for college applicants. A call to Eckerd Theatre Professor Cynthia Totten<\/a> revealed a performance of Metamorphosis <\/em><\/a>was currently in progress.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”left-right” top_margin=”48″ bottom_margin=”48″ right_margin=”16″ column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” el_class=”lg_text” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\u201cShe invited me to be her guest, so my mom and I came to see it, and I knew right then I wanted to come to Eckerd,\u201d Phineas remembers. \u201cIt was amazing. \u201cWhat I love about Eckerd is that students can come here for one thing and discover something else,\u201d Hawk says. \u201cPerforming and taking classes in theatre is a great supplement to film studies because you\u2019re a better director if you know how to talk to actors. And the best way to learn is to act.\u201d<\/p>\n

School Girls<\/em> will run at the American Stage Theatre through Feb. 27. After that Phineas and family will figure out the next step in their acting career.<\/p>\n
