Last year when Crystal Young-Erdos, Ph.D.<\/a>, assistant professor of chemistry<\/a> at Eckerd College, was looking for a project for her upcoming sabbatical, she went to a place she had been before the pandemic stopped the world in its tracks.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]A place where her research skills fit perfectly, and where she could take what she learned about fighting disease and bring it back to her classroom. She might even be able to involve an Eckerd student along the way.<\/p>\n

Researchers at the Johns Hopkins All Children\u2019s Hospital<\/a> (ACH) Institute for Fundamental Biomedical Research (IFBR) in St. Petersburg are investigating health risks for women with two different patterns of body fat deposition<\/a>. According to the hospital, \u201cIt is known that women with excess subcutaneous adipose tissue located in the abdomen (A-FAT), creating an \u201capple-shaped\u201d body, are at greater risk for obesity-related health problems than women who weigh the same but carry excess hip and thigh subcutaneous fat (G-FAT), the kind of fat that creates a distinctive \u201cpear\u201d body shape.<\/p>\n

She and a group of faculty and administrators from Eckerd had toured their facilities in January 2020 and were talking about a collaboration between the College and the hospital. \u201cTwo months later,\u201d Young-Erdos says, \u201cthe world shut down. The pandemic happened and those conversations halted.\u201d<\/p>\n

But not for good. Last year, Young-Erdos reached out to Timothy Osborne, Ph.D., associate dean for basic research and director of the IFBR<\/a>, to renew interest in a research collaboration. \u201cMy skill sets are very much aligned with what\u2019s going on there,\u201d she says, \u201cand I also wondered how we could get students involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

Osborne agreed. \u201cBased on her training and expertise with RNA binding proteins,\u201d he says, \u201cher skill set and interests fit well with a key project in our lab on RNA binding proteins.\u201d And what Young-Erdos learns at ACH, Osborne adds, her students can learn at Eckerd.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe can adapt a lecture describing the research project she is working on here with us to describe the background, rationale and experimental plan followed [by] a bigger picture of where the research fits into the broader understanding of human health and disease,\u201d Osborne says.<\/p>\n

Young-Erdos says what she is working on now is a translational research project. \u201cMy work at Eckerd has been basic research. My students and I are using simple baker\u2019s yeast as a model organism and investigating the molecular mechanism of a less characterized enzyme involved in making ribosomes, the machinery responsible for protein synthesis in all cells.<\/p>\n

\u201cTranslational research, which is what I\u2019m pursuing now, has a more direct human application. Our collaborators at the AdventHealth Translational Research Institute for Metabolism and Diabetes<\/a> recruited the apple- or pear-shaped women and collected tissue samples. They then send the cells to us for a more molecular investigation. The best way for me to accomplish that is to come here [to ACH] and see what\u2019s going on. I know my students\u2019 interests and skill sets. Eckerd junior YuHan Burgess, a Ford Scholar<\/a> and computer science<\/a> student from Bonita Springs, Florida, joined the Osborne Lab research team with Young-Erdos in early February. She did so through the Student Research Training Program, which gives students hands-on research experiences as they work with scientists at the IFBR.<\/p>\n

\u201cI am very fortunate to be given this internship opportunity in Dr. Osborne\u2019s lab within the subject of bioinformatics,\u201d YuHan says. \u201cI am applying the skills I have learned in the classroom in a real-world setting that [has] implications on people\u2019s lives and further research.\u201d<\/p>\n

Young-Erdos will resume teaching general chemistry and biochemistry<\/a> at Eckerd in the fall. \u201cBut we\u2019ve worked out an opportunity where I can also continue collaborating with the Osborne Lab beyond my leave,\u201d she adds. \u201cEventually, I\u2019d like to bring a student with me who I\u2019ll train and will work alongside me. That\u2019s my passion. To integrate the experience and provide meaningful research opportunities for my students.
