A big cheer rolled through the Morean Center for Clay on March 4 as Eckerd College Visiting Assistant Professor of Creative Writing Gloria Mu\u00f1oz<\/a> approached the stage to accept her 2022 MUSE Award<\/a> from the St. Petersburg Arts Alliance (SPAA).<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\u201cIt felt like a reunion of the arts,\u201d Mu\u00f1oz says. \u201cIt was so wonderful to reconnect and see so many artists from the area.\u201d<\/p>\n

SPAA\u2014a local nonprofit dedicated to raising funds and advocating on behalf of St. Petersburg arts professionals and creative businesses\u2014honored Mu\u00f1oz in the category of Literary Arts, one of the many accolades she has received for her poetry collection Danzirly \/ Dawn\u2019s Early<\/em><\/a>. In addition to the 2019 Ambroggio Prize from the Academy of American Poets<\/a> (which included the book\u2019s 2021 publication by the University of Arizona Press), Danzirly<\/em> earned the gold medal in poetry from the 2021 Florida Book Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t expect anything typically,\u201d Mu\u00f1oz says, laughing. \u201cSo when I got the news two weeks ago, I was surprised. All the winners have been invited to a banquet in Tallahassee on April 7. Some of the pieces were published in literary magazines before she gathered them into a complete work. As a child of Colombian immigrants and a first-generation American, collegian and creative, Mu\u00f1oz knew she wanted to publish a collection that included both English and Spanish, but the process of getting a complex linguistic work published required patience. All the while, she continued teaching at Eckerd, encouraging students to keep at their dreams along the way.<\/p>\n

St. Pete seems like the place to be for the arts. They were joined by Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Suzan Harrison<\/a>, Vice President for Strategy and Chief Operating Officer Kanika Tomalin, Associate Dean of Faculty and Theatre Professor Jessica Thonen<\/a>, and Creative Arts Collegium Chair and Associate Professor of Creative Writing K.C. Wolfe<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs a discipline and collegium, we\u2019re very proud of her and see this as more confirmation of the great breadth of knowledge she brings to the classroom and our community of scholars and artists,\u201d Wolfe says.<\/p>\n

The evening included dance, music, immersive art experiences and more. Jaime dreams of pursuing a career in conservation communication, and has bolstered her creative writing<\/a> minor by taking Intro to Creative Writing, Intro to Creative Nonfiction, and Lyric Essay with Mu\u00f1oz\u2014as well as serving all four of her years as an editor with the Eckerd Review<\/em><\/a> literary anthology, where Mu\u00f1oz serves as faculty adviser to the student staff. \u201cShe deserves all the recognition for her hard work,\u201d Jaime says.<\/p>\n

Mu\u00f1oz notes that the award is more encouragement for her to continue her work in mentoring local writers but also expand her work in the literary community by making programs that are free or very low-cost. Her goal is to highlight local talent and connect them with national traveling artists.<\/p>\n
