Jeff Goodell, author of The Water Will Come: Rising Seas, Sinking Cities, and the Remaking of the Civilized World<\/em>, came to Eckerd College on March 31 to give a presentation on sea level rise and the disastrous effects it will have on our society as a whole.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Goodell is an award-winning investigative journalist, writer and contributing editor for Rolling Stone <\/em>magazine<\/a>. He has written several books about environmentalism and global warming and is considered a leading expert in his field.<\/p>\n

Goodell began his lecture with some sobering facts about the effects of climate change, pointing out that Eckerd is \u201cground zero\u201d in the fight against sea level rise. Citing new research from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration<\/a> (NOAA), he explained that even in a best-case scenario, our oceans will gain about a foot of water in the next 30 years. In a worst-case scenario, they will gain 13 feet by 2150. \u201cThe water will come,\u201d Goodell said. \u201cThe question is how high and how fast.\u201d<\/p>\n

Throughout his presentation, Goodell spoke about his experience writing The Water Will Come<\/em>, detailing the four-year research project that went into the final book. On a trip to Miami, he saw firsthand the effects of sea level rise after extreme flooding during spring tide in 2013. This experience sparked a global investigation into sea level rise, inspiring him to travel to places around the world most impacted by flooding.<\/p>\n

After listening to Goodell\u2019s presentation, Cameron \u201cCam\u201d Larmer\u2014a senior marine science<\/a> student from Sarasota, Florida\u2014called climate change \u201cthe problem of the century\u201d and talked about how the issue of climate change connected to his studies. \u201cAny issue that I\u2019ve been interested in with ocean conservation, it all kind of comes back to climate change,\u201d Cam says.<\/p>\n

Goodell insisted that forward thinking and creativity would be essential to reimagining our world in the face of rising seas. \u201cThere\u2019s a lot of thinking about how to make this a landscape that is friendly for people and for life, in general. This is the kind of creative thinking that I think is so exciting,\u201d he told the students.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kasey Laguna, a junior geosciences<\/a> student from Phillipsburg, New Jersey, found Goodell\u2019s presentation \u201cempowering\u201d and says that Goodell has inspired future work in climate change activism. \u201cI thought he said a lot of things that people are kind of afraid to say,\u201d Kasey says. \u201cAnd I liked his idea of living with the water \u2026 I\u2019d never heard anyone talk about that before.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
