Three Eckerd College sophomores were recently awarded 2022 National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Ernest F. Hollings Undergraduate Scholarships<\/a>, bringing the school\u2019s total number of recipients to 105\u2014more than at any other college in the country.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Since 2005 the government agency has selected students from around the nation to receive up to $9,500 per year for two years of full-time study and a 10-week, full-time, paid summer internship at a NOAA<\/a> facility one year after receiving the award.<\/p>\n

On April 1, Makayla Neldner, a sophomore biology<\/a> and ancient studies<\/a> student from Greendale, Wisconsin, was doing work on her cellphone for the Eckerd College Search and Rescue team<\/a>. She had applied for the Hollings Scholarship and knew the winners would be announced any day. \u201cI saw \u2018Congratulations!\u2019 pop up on my phone,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was April Fools\u2019 Day, so, you know \u2026 Then I saw the message was from NOAA. I dropped my phone.\u201d<\/p>\n

Makayla sees the scholarship as a chance to do much-needed research outside the classroom. \u201cI was hoping I would get an internship with NOAA and do research with them,\u201d she says. \u201cWe don\u2019t know where we\u2019ll be sent, but I suggested the Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory on Lake Michigan and a marine lab on the Pacific coast in Washington state.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” el_class=”lg_text” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text]She also is excited to explore the connection between biology and ancient studies. \u201cLearning about what the Romans did to the environment\u2014they polluted their water\u2014a lot of that overlaps into what we\u2019re doing today,\u201d she explains.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\u201cBeing able to connect what people did in ancient times and what we\u2019re doing now can show what we can learn from them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Maddie Reifsteck, a sophomore marine science<\/a> and creative writing<\/a> student from Portland, Oregon, also received the good news about her Hollings Scholarship on April 1. \u201cAnd I thought it was an April Fools\u2019 joke,\u201d she says with a chuckle. \u201cI know I did all the work, but I kept thinking, What if this isn\u2019t real and I\u2019m dreaming?\u201d<\/p>\n

This summer, Maddie has been invited to take part in the University of Delaware\u2019s Marine Science Summer Intern program. \u201cI\u2019ll likely be working with the ORB [Ocean Exploration, Remote Sensing, Biogeography] Lab to compile a database of fish species that participate in vertical migration,\u201d she explains. \u201cI may also be participating in collecting sea temperatures and salinity data.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor my Hollings Scholarship in the summer of 2023, I could end up back at the University of Delaware, but my hope is to branch out to work in a different specialty area.\u201d An area like public policy. \u201cEventually,\u201d she says, \u201cI would really like to work alongside politicians and other scientists who are finding ways to regulate and conserve oceanic resources and environments. This includes publicizing and expanding marine protected areas and contributing to the discussion around deep-sea mining and its management.\u201d<\/p>\n

Eckerd\u2019s third 2022 Hollings Scholarship winner is Gracelyn Ham, a sophomore marine science student from Eagle River, Alaska. She is spending her summer in Juneau working with the National Science Foundation\u2019s Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research<\/a>. \u201cWe\u2019re looking at how climate change, forest fires and glacial melting impact coastal margins,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

Because of the pandemic, Gracelyn spent her first year of undergraduate studies at the University of Alaska Southeast in Juneau before transferring to Eckerd last year. She\u2019s not sure where her Hollings Scholarship will take her. \u201cAlaska is beautiful, but I was born and raised here, and I want to see other places,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd I\u2019ll get an opportunity to work with NOAA as an undergraduate.\u201d<\/p>\n

When did Gracelyn learn she had received the scholarship? \u201cApril 1,\u201d she answers. \u201cI was sitting in my chemistry<\/a> class, and I was so freaked out I had to remove myself.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
