Sights, sounds and aromas of more than 20 different cultures filled the GO Pavilion on April 22 during Eckerd College\u2019s annual Festival of Cultures.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]This Eckerd tradition highlights the cultural and geographic diversity represented in the College\u2019s international student population. This year, student ambassadors chose to represent their countries with specific foods, music, dance or poetry.<\/h3>\n

Latinos Unidos<\/a>, a multicultural student club, hosted a cultural dance lesson, and a group of ELS English Language Center at Eckerd College<\/a> students joined forces with the Japanese Culture Club<\/a> to perform a choreographed traditional dance to end the event. Currently, ELS\u2014which brings students from around the world to Eckerd for intensive English classes\u2014is hosting a group of 50 Japanese students. Other events included a Caribbean steel drum band and a Colombian poetry reading by Prech Potesak, a first-year marine science<\/a> student from Clinton, Connecticut, and Latinos Unidos club president. Bailey Usdan, a first-year student from Nashville, Tennessee, also performed \u201cIzlel e Delio Haidutin,\u201d a traditional Bulgarian song.<\/p>\n

Other Eckerd students chose to represent their cultures by providing small tastes of their countries\u2019 popular dishes. \u201cMost students will cook their own food \u2026 Usually what they\u2019ll cook is a little bite-sized taste of the culture, so there won\u2019t be a whole meal from each table,\u201d says International Student Association President Morgan Bower, a senior environmental studies<\/a> student from Nassau, Bahamas.<\/p>\n

Bower and ISA have been planning this event since November 2021, assisted by Olivier Debure, the director of international student services<\/a> and faculty adviser for ISA. He offered Bower inspiration from past festivals and helped with general logistics.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe festival can only take place thanks to the generosity and the dedication of our international students who volunteer to share their cultures in a fun and instructive way,\u201d Debure says. \u201cThey spend a lot of time thinking of ways to participate and to make it a worthwhile event for all.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row]\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
