Assistant Professor of Sociology Lisa R. Miller, Ph.D.<\/a>, sat in the living rooms of gay and lesbian seniors and listened to the effects that widespread discrimination had on their lives and well-being.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Some still carry fear that keeps them from seeking needed opportunities.<\/p>\n

\u201cI did 60 interviews across the state of Florida. Gay, lesbian and bisexual people 55 and older would tell me their life stories of coming out, discrimination, and end-of-life care plans,\u201d says Miller, who has been teaching at Eckerd College for six years. \u201cOlder GLB people are fearful of entering retirement communities, because of possible discrimination by residents and staff. \u201cTheir eyes light up when we talk about the upstream approach. It\u2019s a parable that says when you see people drowning in a river, some people will help the people get out, others will build a raft to get them to safety, and others will travel upstream to see what is throwing the people in the water,\u201d Miller explains. \u201cPublic health research often uses the upstream approach of examining the societal factors that contribute to illness, such as higher incidences of asthma in Black communities because of poorer air quality in Black neighborhoods.\u201d<\/p>\n

Doug Williams Jr., a senior communication and sociology student from Jacksonville, Florida, says nothing he\u2019s heard of the treatment of marginalized groups in the healthcare system has surprised him, but the class is still fascinating.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy looking at health inequities in industry and society as a whole, you understand you are a product of that society, and you want to know the type of society it is,\u201d says Doug, who will go on to Florida State University\u2019s Master\u2019s in Corporate Communications program this fall. \u201cThis class gives you an insight into the world around us by focusing on health.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” el_class=”lg_text” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text]Miller spends the semester rolling out data and studies, introducing students to the work of public and community health practitioners, and asking students to think critically about how interventions take place.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=””][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]\u201cIn grad school [at Indiana University], I began studying the sociology of health and illness,\u201d Miller says. \u201cLGBTQ health interests me and shows the ways in which society is very stuck and can worsen people\u2019s existing health conditions. Issues of minoritized health problems stem from existing social erasure and systematic discrimination.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The same can be said for communities of color, because of the fraught history of medical experimentation and indifference to outcomes.<\/p>\n

Students in the course are asked to research a health\/aging topic and then use a creative medium\u2014from podcasts to art\u2014to communicate with the public about the particulars (history, research, possible interventions, etc.). Already the topics range from Black infant\/maternal mortality to the effects of poverty on health.<\/p>\n

\u201cRight outside our campus, we see gentrification happening really heavily,\u201d Doug says. \u201cI want to see what effects that is having on the community, be it access to healthy food or forced relocation because of rising housing prices.
