Many of the people gathered outside Brown Hall on May 17 remembered Mary Oliphant\u2019s outsized contribution to the community feeling they got whenever they passed through the building\u2019s doors.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ bottom_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”3\/4″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Oliphant spent 31 years as a housekeeper at Eckerd College and made a lifetime of positive impact before her passing in February 2021. Shortly after her death, work began to find a way to honor her on campus, immortalizing her positive spirit and motherly care in bronze.<\/p>\n

Finally, after more than a year of preparation, a plaque in memory of \u201cMs. Mary\u201d and a newly designated flower bed called \u201cMary\u2019s Garden\u201d were unveiled at a dedication service with Oliphant\u2019s family and Eckerd faculty, staff, students and alumni in attendance. Director of Religious Life<\/a> and Chaplain Doug McMahon opened the ceremony in prayer before welcoming several speakers to offer tribute to the life of a missing member of the Eckerd family.<\/p>\n

\u201cFor so many of us, Mary\u2019s loving smile and warm morning greeting started our day on campus. Womack first met Oliphant as an Eckerd student, and fondly remembers being welcomed to Oliphant\u2019s home for a crab boil where she mingled with grandchildren. Glen and Oliphant sold fish dinners to provide monetary gifts to high school graduates from the church, and in Oliphant\u2019s honor, the church will award its first college scholarships in June. \u201cShe was such a good person, and we miss her so much,\u201d Glen said.<\/p>\n
