bg_image_animation=&#8221;none&#8221; border_type=&#8221;simple&#8221; column_border_width=&#8221;none&#8221; column_border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;][vc_column_text]The Eckerd College Dog Training Program is open to any of the more than 100 Eckerd students who own dogs and live on campus, and the hope is that the research will lead to new, innovative, low-cost therapies to help people, particularly college students, better manage stress.<\/p>\n<p>Now, the more than 1,500 on-campus Eckerd students who don\u2019t own dogs can also participate.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to a recent Presidential Innovation Fund grant and a partnership with the Humane Society of Pinellas, Highfill and her Eckerd colleagues <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/psychology\/faculty\/hofmann\/\">Sara Hofmann, Ph.D.<\/a>, assistant professor of psychology; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/chemistry\/faculty\/young-erdos\/\">Crystal Young-Erdos, Ph.D.<\/a>, assistant professor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/chemistry\/\">chemistry<\/a>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/philosophy\/faculty\/sears\/\">Jason Sears<\/a>, instructor of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/philosophy\/\">philosophy<\/a>, plan to open the program to all Eckerd students starting in September.<\/p>\n<p>The Fund, was established this year by Eckerd President Dami\u00e1n Fern\u00e1ndez, Ph.D., to provide seed grants of up to $5,000 to faculty, staff and students \u201cthat allow them to launch projects that support research, learning, entrepreneurship and\/or community engagement aligned with our Strategic Plan initiatives and themes,\u201d Fernandez says. \u201cThe selected proposals showcase collaboration, innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit in keeping with and advancing the promise of the <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1yHpO5TGHHkIOeZnRzbkXqAVix7BwzNM9\/view\">Strategic Plan<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Eckerd Dog Training Program, which is free to students, is funded by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/aspec\/\">Academy of Senior Professionals at Eckerd College<\/a>. \u201cBut it will be nice to have the seed money to continue the project and expand on it,\u201d Highfill says. \u201cIt would have been difficult going forward without it.<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=&#8221;full_width_content&#8221; It will be open to any students. And I\u2019m really excited about taking the program to the Humane Society [based in Clearwater].
