Gas prices in the Tampa Bay area have soared to nearly $5 a gallon, and according to AAA, that won\u2019t change anytime soon.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ bottom_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Prices are at record highs\u2014up 66% from a year ago. It cost about $40 to fill a 15-gallon tank last year; now that cost is around $70. The effect has been profound on everything from mobile businesses to Meals on Wheels.<\/p>\n

The Florida Legislature passed a gas tax break a few months ago that will save motorists 26 cents per gallon, but that won\u2019t take effect until October, and it\u2019s only for a month. The Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority reports ridership has increased nearly 4% from April to May. But the PSTA is not immune to higher fuel costs, although for now, those costs aren\u2019t being passed on to riders.<\/p>\n

He often uses automobile engine parts in his lab to demonstrate principles of chemistry and physics. He also works several hours a week at Ferman Ford in Clearwater as a certified technician. He does everything from tuneups to complicated diagnostics.<\/p>\n

To find one of the biggest impacts on fuel efficiency, Larkin says, look down. \u201cFirst, properly inflate your tires so you can keep the rolling resistance to a minimum,\u201d he explains. \u201cManufacturers optimize the pressures based on factors that affect the safe drivability of your car and they also keep miles per gallon in mind.<\/p>\n

\u201cOn the [edge] of the driver\u2019s-side door is a sticker that tells you what that pressure should be. If it\u2019s not there, check your owner\u2019s manual or look online.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd rotate your tires,\u201d he adds. \u201cThe front tires might wear out more than the rear, and that can create more friction depending on the wear pattern. All those things really add up. As for avoiding higher (and more expensive) grades of gas, that could be a mistake. \u201cIt depends on your car,\u201d Larkin says. \u201cSome cars, like performance cars where the pistons are larger, use higher octane. Running 87 octane (regular gas) in a car like that can cause knocking and create excessive engine wear. The best thing to do is look in your manual and see what grade the automaker recommends.\u201d<\/p>\n

Is it better to idle your car or turn it off and restart it? \u201cTurning the engine off and restarting it,\u201d Larkin says. \u201cThe amount of fuel you save by turning the engine off is maybe a third of the fuel you would use if you kept the engine idling.\u201d<\/p>\n

Larkin says that as cars get older, they become less efficient \u201cjust because of wear and tear on the engine. Regularly changing the oil, making sure the brakes are routinely serviced and making sure the tires are properly inflated can save you a mile or two a gallon.\u201d<\/p>\n

Finally, even if it\u2019s painful, try not to let your gas gauge hover around E. \u201cThe fuel pump has to work harder,\u201d Larkin says, \u201cand whatever sediment that is at the bottom of the tank could be drawn into the filtering mechanism.\u201d
