The problem is serious, but not always obvious. Children and young adults often show up in hospitals, clinics and pediatricians\u2019 offices with mental health issues like depression. But because they may lack specific training, some doctors have difficulty recognizing the problems, or they may be unsure about where to send the children for help.<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”2\/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Sara Hofmann, Ph.D.<\/a>, assistant professor of psychology<\/a> at Eckerd College and a licensed psychologist, and her colleague from Johns Hopkins All Children\u2019s Hospital<\/a> in St. Petersburg have found a solution that involves training pediatric residents in a hospital setting with the help of actors. And now, thanks to a recent $20,000 grant from the Florida Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics<\/a>, they\u2019ll be able to share the program with other hospitals throughout Florida.<\/p>\n

Jasmine Reese, M.D., is the director of the Adolescent and Young Adult Specialty Clinic at Johns Hopkins All Children\u2019s. She also is the adolescent medicine rotation director for the hospital\u2019s pediatric residency program, as well as an assistant professor of pediatrics at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.<\/p>\n

She wanted to create a training program with mental health professionals that we could build from the ground up; there\u2019s nothing like [this] that I know of in the country. I thought that was a fantastic idea, and that\u2019s how I got involved.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hofmann notes that suicide is the second-leading cause of death among teenagers\u2014behind only accidents. \u201cIt\u2019s a crisis, and the pandemic set off a mental health tsunami among teenagers,\u201d she says. \u201cThe point is for pediatricians to identify depression and then connect the adolescents with resources.\u201d[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ bottom_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”all” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” el_class=”lg_text” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column_text]Hofmann explains that most teenagers rarely, if ever, see a mental health professional, but many will see a pediatrician once a year. \u201cSo that\u2019s why we are targeting pediatricians. In the second half, which is a first for such training, a simulated patient is brought into an exam room. The \u201cpatient\u201d is an actor hired and trained to role-play an adolescent with depression. \u201cThe residents not only learn what depression looks like,\u201d Hofmann says, \u201cbut they also get a sense of what this is like in real time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reese and Hofmann watch the exercise on video and then discuss it with the resident. It\u2019s the same general idea, Hofmann notes, as a mock trial used by attorneys for training. Johns Hopkins has set aside a lab just for the simulations. \u201cThey\u2019ve been incredibly supportive,\u201d the professor adds.<\/p>\n

The grant, Hofmann says, will allow the program to expand to other hospitals in Florida, and to find and train the actors who are key to the role-play exercise.<\/p>\n
