\u201cThe idea is, you can stay for a couple of minutes or a whole hour,\u201d Delano explains. \u201cIt\u2019s open and welcoming, but intimate enough for one-on-one connection. It\u2019s also a chance for students to interact with native Spanish speakers on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n

Delano found her love of Spanish through encouragement from her teachers at the Academy of the Holy Names high school in Tampa, Florida. For a school trip, the students traveled to Madrid, Spain, to put all they had practiced in the classroom to work.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat just kind of motivated me to continue learning Spanish,\u201d Delano says. \u201cI didn\u2019t have a career in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

I could study history, art, literature and culture,\u201d she recalls. \u201cFrom then on, I had a lot of interest in Spanish beyond language classes.\u201d<\/span>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ bottom_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”1\/1″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]She attended the University of South Florida for her bachelor\u2019s degree and decided after graduation that she didn\u2019t know enough. In USF\u2019s master\u2019s program, Delano did a teaching fellowship during her first semester and then returned to Madrid to study abroad.<\/p>\n

\u201cBefore, I worked in mall retail,\u201d she admits, \u201cbut when I stepped into the classroom, that was the first time I thought, This job, this is fun. \u2026 Okay, maybe I would like to be a professor.\u201d<\/p>\n

Her path to the classroom took her to Emory University in Atlanta. She began research in Spanish-city mystery novels\u2014finding gothic themes, literary tropes and anxieties about the future in tomes from the 19th century.<\/p>\n

After earning her Ph.D. in Spanish, she took her first teaching job at Colby College in Waterville, Maine, before returning to her Southern roots at The University of Mississippi. As an advocate for personal connection in education, Delano found herself longing for smaller classes again and decided to return to Tampa with her family to teach high school for five years.<\/p>\n

When Eckerd announced openings in its Spanish discipline, she saw an opportunity to return to a more intimate collegiate environment at an institution that values study abroad and advancing social justice\u2014two of her other passions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This semester, she\u2019s teaching Spanish 101 to three classes of students, introducing them to a language she loves and can\u2019t wait for them to be excited about as well. In the future, she hopes to organize Winter Term trips<\/a> abroad and Spring Break Service Trips<\/a> that allow students to find passion in the language by practicing with real human beings. In a world of language-learning apps, nothing beats speaking with a human, Delano says.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

People provide culture and context. I try to have a lot of group conversations and activities to get to know my students. The language has to be relevant to your life.
