The closest populated area to the site is a place called Leymebamba, a village of about 5,000 people nestled high in the Andes Mountains of northern Peru.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][\/vc_row][vc_row type=”full_width_content” full_screen_row_position=”middle” column_margin=”default” column_direction=”default” column_direction_tablet=”default” column_direction_phone=”default” scene_position=”center” top_padding=”32″ text_color=”dark” text_align=”left” row_border_radius=”none” row_border_radius_applies=”bg” overflow=”visible” advanced_gradient_angle=”0″ overlay_strength=”0.3″ gradient_direction=”left_to_right” shape_divider_position=”bottom” bg_image_animation=”none” shape_type=”” gradient_type=”default”][vc_column column_padding=”padding-2-percent” column_padding_tablet=”inherit” column_padding_phone=”inherit” column_padding_position=”right” column_element_spacing=”default” background_color_opacity=”1″ background_hover_color_opacity=”1″ column_shadow=”none” column_border_radius=”none” column_link_target=”_self” column_position=”default” gradient_direction=”left_to_right” overlay_strength=”0.3″ width=”2\/3″ tablet_width_inherit=”default” tablet_text_alignment=”default” phone_text_alignment=”default” animation_type=”default” bg_image_animation=”none” border_type=”simple” column_border_width=”none” column_border_style=”solid”][vc_column_text]Five Eckerd College students, selected and led by Anna Guengerich, Ph.D.<\/a>, assistant professor of anthropology<\/a>, will use the village as a base camp while they spend three months this coming summer taking part in an archaeological dig at a site of pre-Inca ruins.<\/h3>\n

\u201cThe students will be studying the conquest of the indigenous people of this region by the Inca Empire in the 1400s and the ecological impact it had,\u201d Guengerich explains. \u201cWe want to try to understand the changes that happened hundreds of years ago, so we can have a better understanding of what is happening now.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guengerich says that because the location is at a high altitude\u2014an elevation of about 9,000 feet\u2014the weather is usually cold and rainy. \u201cWe\u2019ll be rotating, staying a week in town and then a week on-site,\u201d she says. \u201cIt takes several hours to hike to the site. Another important part is getting to know people from different walks of life. This is a very rural part of Peru, and they\u2019ll be in trenches working together with brushes and trowels.\u201d<\/p>\n
