It\u2019s almost like she\u2019s back at the <a href=\"\/green\/farm\/\">Eckerd College Community Farm<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI started with <a href=\"\/marinescience\/\">marine science<\/a>, but the <a href=\"\/environmental-studies\/\">environmental science<\/a> stuff really drew me in,\u201d says Core, a biology graduate from Abita Springs, Louisiana. \u201cWhen I saw the garden [which became the Eckerd College Community Farm], I fell in love with growing food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Core served as an EC Community Farm ambassador her senior year\u2014leading tours, working on plantings, and brushing up on the science behind growing things with faculty members and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/news\/blog\/eckerd-college-farm-manager-to-empower-others\/\">Farm Manager Jon Prieto<\/a>. The farm employs students as ambassadors, composters and assistants throughout the academic year, so they gather experience in every aspect of running a liberal arts farm.<\/p>\n<p>Since its grand opening in October 2021, the farm has generated several new on-campus jobs that train students for careers in the burgeoning urban agriculture industry, says EC Farm Faculty Director, Environmental Studies Instructor and Internship Coordinator <a href=\"\/environmental-studies\/faculty\/himmelfarb\/\">David Himmelfarb, Ph.D.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Any Eckerd student can volunteer for workdays on the farm\u2014learning to seed, weed and harvest as they explore the science behind biodiversity versus monocultures and the importance of native species.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; border_type=&#8221;simple&#8221; column_border_width=&#8221;none&#8221; column_border_style=&#8221;solid&#8221;][vc_column_text]\u201cI think it\u2019s really a great place to start to get hands-on experience and translate their skills to a more commercial application,\u201d Himmefarb says. \u201cThey also get to do a lot of different things, and the range of responsibilities is greater as well as the opportunities for growth.<\/p>\n<p>Core also helped create the Banana Bike, a uniquely Eckerd event where farmworkers distribute the campus\u2019s bumper crop of bananas via Eckerd yellow bikes and stir up student excitement about the farm in between classes. The memory is so great, she even got a tattoo of the two-wheeled sustainability promoter.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew I wanted to get an Eckerd tattoo after graduation,\u201d Core says while laughing. \u201cThe yellow bikes are really iconic, so getting the banana bike that incorporates my love for the farm was even better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Shyann Oglesby, a <a href=\"\/environmental-studies\/\">senior environmental studie<\/a>s and <a href=\"\/animal-studies\/\">animal studies<\/a> student from Liberty, South Carolina, took Himmelfarb\u2019s Food and Sustainability class and really liked the parallels between what she knew from her family\u2019s small farm to what was happening on the campus\u2019s 1-acre plot. As a farm ambassador, it\u2019s her job to know what\u2019s happening and why\u2014from in the fruit tree grove to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/news\/blog\/eckerd-club-community-education\/\">newly installed tea garden<\/a>. She uses that knowledge in her off-campus volunteer activity at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rclub.net\/service\/edible-peace-patch\/\">Edible Peace Patch<\/a>, where college students teach elementary schoolers gardening basics at their schools.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_column][vc_column column_padding=&#8221;no-extra-padding&#8221; It\u2019s more than just a job. You are part of a movement to understand food.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Himmelfarb agrees and says that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eckerd.edu\/news\/blog\/faculty-novel-uses-for-farm\/\">farm\u2019s liberal arts approach<\/a> uniquely prepares students for careers after college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe way that we think about food production is a more holistic approach. We trace everything from history to economics to chemistry to biology to politics in our work,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt\u2019s not just about growing food, but how those actions fit into a broader system.
