Graduates: or\u2026whatever can one do with a degree in ART<\/em>?<\/h3>\n[\/vc_column_text][divider line_type=”No Line” custom_height=”32″][vc_column_text css=”” text_direction=”default”]Since our first senior class in 1964 we have graduated over 600 majors in Visual Arts, many of whom have gone on to earn graduate degrees in a variety of fields. Since 2006 our graduates have earned advanced degrees from, or are enrolled in graduate programs at institutions such as Goddard College, Savannah College of Art & Design, Pratt Institute, Maryland Institute College of Art, The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Rochester Institute of Technology, Ohio University, University of Florida, Florida State University, University of South Florida, University of New Mexico, Southern Illinois University, University of Kentucky, Seattle University, Pennsylvania State University, George Mason University, Kent State University, University of Missouri, University of Delaware, Virginia Commonwealth University, Claremont Graduate School, Pacific Northwest College of Art, University of Indiana at Bloomington, Lesley University, Ball State University, American University, Texas A&M at Corpus Christi, Hunter College, Watkins College of Art, Mills College of Art, Edinburgh College of Art (Scotland), and the Burren College of Art (Ireland).<\/p>\n

Our graduates ultimately travel down a great many career paths, many of them art-related. One can find our Visual Arts alumni\/ae engaged in art-related fields as varied as university or college teaching, public school teaching, sculpture, photography, design, illustration, advertising, graphic design, printmaking, visual effects, computer graphics, ceramics, functional pottery, jewelry, stained glass, painting, architecture, art direction, fashion design, community-based arts, film production, exhibition design, arts consulting, communications, performance art, woodworking, calligraphy, urban planning, theatre set design, lighting design, gallery owning, branding, landscape architecture, interior design, arts management and art therapy.<\/p>\n

Not all of our majors elect to pursue art as a career, for we also have had alumni\/ae who have chosen professions in fields as varied as civil engineering, psychotherapy, banking, retail sales, antiques, online networking, computer programming, music, military intelligence, social work, golf instruction, nursing, nutrition, youth ministry, law, radiology, real estate, and the list goes on!<\/p>\n

Margaret Brommelsiek \u201980<\/a> recently retired as Associate Research Professor in the School of Nursing and Health Studies at the University of Missouri \/ Kansas City. She has spent many years developing interdisciplinary programs between the fine arts and other academic subjects.<\/p>\n

Grace-Anne Alfiero \u201804<\/a> (MFA, Goddard) is President and CEO at Arts in Action<\/a> in Philadelphia, a consulting firm for non-profit organizations. She was founder of Creative Clay<\/a> in St. Petersburg, and served as its Executive Director until 2011.<\/p>\n

Kristin Baker \u201985<\/a> is a teacher of gifted children, and in 2017 the New Jersey Association for Gifted Children recognized Kristin as Teacher of the Year.<\/p>\n

Glory Benacka \u201906<\/a> is a greenhouse supervisor at The Land Institute in Salina, Kansas.<\/p>\n

Andrew Blaurock \u201921<\/a> is a biologist and graphic artist at AABexotics<\/a> in Largo, Florida.<\/p>\n

Joy Brown \u201972<\/a> has exhibited her ceramic sculptures in one-person shows in Europe and Asia, and her work has been prominently featured in Ceramics Monthly. Joy is also co-founder and president of the Still Mountain Center<\/a>, a nonprofit arts organization in Connecticut whose mission is to support, promote and celebrate artistic exchange between the United States and Asia. Jay Clewis ’96<\/a> earned his M.S. in Communications, and is now Assistant Professor in the School of Public Communications at Syracuse University.<\/p>\n

Kevin Collins \u201999<\/a> is a professional golf instructor at the IMG Academy in Bradenton.<\/p>\n

Neverne Covington \u201977<\/a> is a painter, printmaker and book artist in St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n

Jonathan Creamer \u201998<\/a> is a Research Advisor at MGC Health Advisors in St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n

Carolanne Currier \u201969<\/a> has taken on a second career as a ceramic artist after spending many years as an investigator for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).<\/p>\n

Lisa Daily \u201903<\/a> earned her Ph.D. in Cultural Studies at George Mason University, and is now on the faculty at NYU.<\/p>\n

Susan DeMay \u201977<\/a> (MS, Peabody\/Vanderbilt, and MA, Tennessee Tech) taught ceramics for many years at Vanderbilt University.<\/p>\n

Benjamin Dimmitt ’76<\/a> is a photographer who taught for years at the International Center of Photography in New York. In 2023 he published a book of his work in photography titled An Unflinching Look: Elegy for Wetlands.<\/a><\/p>\n

Dawn Regan Ellenberg \u201986<\/a> has been the Creative Director at Eckerd College since 2004.<\/p>\n

frje Echeverria \u201966<\/a> (MFA, University of Arkansas) is Professor Emeritus of Painting at the University of Northern Iowa.<\/p>\n

Brad Ennis \u201910<\/a> was once a photo assistant and production assistant at Annie Leibovitz studio in New York, and since that time he has been working as a fashion photographer, as well as a lighting director, first assistant, and gaffer for other photographers, directors and Directors of Photography.<\/p>\n

Danny Griffin ’14<\/a> works as an artist at the Cider Creek Collective on the Mendocino Coast in California.<\/p>\n

Ben Hamburger \u201910<\/a> earned his MFA in Community Arts from the Maryland College Institute of Art.\u00a0 His thesis work at MICA explored the consequences of urban development in Baltimore; it was reviewed in the Baltimore press, and also featured in an interview<\/a> on NPR. Paige Howard \u201908<\/a> is now working as a Career Adviser at the Savannah College of Art and Design.<\/p>\n

Stanton Hunter \u201880<\/a> (MFA, University of Southern California) is Professor Emeritus of Ceramics and Sculpture at Chaffey College in California.<\/p>\n

Molly Hurd \u201916<\/a> earned her Master\u2019s in Counseling with a concentration in Art Therapy from PennWest Edinboro University, and is now working as an art therapist in Atlanta.<\/p>\n

Harriett Huss \u201973<\/a> is a painter, and founding member of the Melrose Bay Art Gallery<\/a> near Gainesville, Florida.<\/p>\n

Stuart Hyatt \u201997<\/a> is an interdisciplinary artist and musician, and founder of Team Records. His cd package design for his own collaborative recording Clouds<\/a> was one of five finalists for a Grammy Award in 2006. Stu earned a Masters of Architecture from Ball State University (in addition to his MFA from Indiana University), and he also is a member of the M12 Studio<\/a>, an innovative art and design collective that explores the aesthetics of rural cultures and landscapes. In 2018, with the Field Works Collective<\/a>, he composed and premiered a new album with a sold-out live performance from deep inside the Cave Without a Name<\/a>, near Bourne, Texas. In 2019, Stuart was honored by being named a National Geographic Explorer<\/a>.\u00a0 And in 2020 Stu\u2019s recording \u201cUltrasonic\u201d was reviewed<\/a> in the New York Times.<\/p>\n

D.J. Jackson \u201912<\/a> is now an independent scientific illustrator.<\/p>\n

Martha Ensign Johnson \u201975<\/a> is now retired from teaching printmaking at Westmont College, and currently lives and works in Asheville, NC.<\/p>\n

Blaze Birge Jones \u201998 was a founding member of the Flynn Creek Circus<\/a> in Mendocino County, California, committed to \u201cpushing tradition to the edge.\u201d Blaze is Creative Director of the circus, and specializes as a trapeze artist. Mary Law \u201969<\/a> (MFA, Alfred University) is Senior Lecturer in Ceramics at Contra Costa College, and recently also at Diablo Valley College, in California.<\/p>\n

Betsy Orbe Lester \u201993<\/a> (MFA, USF) has been teaching Visual Problem Solving for us for a number of years.\u00a0 She maintains a studio at Art Lofts in St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n

Jessica Loving ’05<\/a> has been exhibiting her paintings frequently in her home state of Colorado. Jessica also is the founder of a full-service marketing boutique there, called (in)spiregraphics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Nadya Lyapunova ’18<\/a>\u00a0 is a Brand and Marketing Designer at Lena,<\/a> in Louisville, Colorado.<\/p>\n

Devin McDonald \u201910<\/a> earned her MFA at the University of Missouri-Columbia (where Bede Clarke \u201983 was on the faculty), and she is now a ceramics studio tech at the Running with Scissors<\/a> studio in Portland, Maine.<\/p>\n

Fabrice Maurel \u201992<\/a> is an award-winning artist in the world of graphic design, animation and visual FX.<\/p>\n

Ainslee McAndrew \u201907<\/a> is a designer at Block Shop Textiles in California.<\/p>\n

Casey McDonough \u201903<\/a> (MFA, RISD) has been a resident artist at the Morean Center for Clay, Red Lodge Clay Center and the Hjorring Kunstmuseum in Denmark, as well as an apprentice to Don Reitz. He has also taught at Cedar Crest College and the University of Central Arkansas.\u00a0 He currently teaches at the Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n

Barbara McFadyen \u201974<\/a> is a metalsmith and enamelist who has been designing jewelry in gold, silver, and enamel for over four decades. Barbara received her MFA in Metal Design at East Carolina University, and has exhibited with the American Crafts Council, the Smithsonian Institution, SNAG, and the Enamelist Society.<\/p>\n

Ian Meares \u201900<\/a> earned his MFA in Studio Practice at Pennsylvania State University, and more recently an MFA in Critical & Curatorial Practice, at the University of California Irvine, Irvine California.\u00a0 He has taught at several institutions, among them Ohio State University, the University of Arkansas, and the University of Illinois.\u00a0 Currently he is Artist in Residence at the Interdisciplinary Ceramic Research Center and an adjunct professor at the University of Kansas.<\/p>\n

Beth Mueller \u201977<\/a> has her own production company, featuring ceramics, clothing and paper products of her design.<\/p>\n

Lia Nydes \u201915<\/a> spent many months as a photography and video intern with the National Park Service in Alaska, and earned her MFA in Environmental Filmmaking at American University. She is now a freelance cinematographer.<\/p>\n

Ingram Ober \u201998<\/a> (MFA, Claremont Graduate U) teaches sculpture and foundry at Palomar College in California.\u00a0 He and his partner Marisol Rendon have installed two sculptures at the Underwater Museum of Art<\/a> in the Florida Panhandle that now serve as artificial reefs.<\/p>\n

Brandi Palmer ’96<\/a> earned her Master\u2019s in Arts Administration at the Savannah College of Art and Design, as well as an MFA in Studio Art, and is now a member of SixStar Studios in St. Petersburg, and the owner of Bran Palmer Studios, an art and consulting business firm also in St. Petersburg.<\/p>\n

Mark Pauline \u201977<\/a> is founder of the California-based industrial performance art group Survival Research Laboratories<\/a>, which boasts of staging \u201cthe most dangerous shows on Earth.\u201d\u00a0 Here is a New York Times review<\/a> of a performance hosted by a gallery in Chelsea in 2018.<\/p>\n

Conor Pickett ’13<\/a> is now a ceramics teacher and gallery director at the Pingree School in South Hamilton, Massachusetts.<\/p>\n

Hunter Pressley \u201919<\/a> earned her M.Ed in Counseling & Personnel Services with a Concentration in Art Therapy from the University of Louisville, and now works as an art teacher and art therapist in North Carolina.<\/p>\n

Lourdes Rosas Rasdall ’84<\/a> is Vice President of the Board of Wildlife Artists of the Carolinas<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Elaine Raybourn \u201985<\/a> (Ph.D. University of New Mexico) is engaged in research with Sandia Labs, investigating the learning experience design of immersive transmedia ecosystems to support informal learning, ubiquitous computing, and the anthropology of next generation learners\u2019 interactions with future learning technology. Maggie Sanger \u201915<\/a> is a designer and installation artist in Nashville.<\/p>\n

Emily Schadow \u201916<\/a> is a graphic designer in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n

Elise Shapiro ’22<\/a> is a freelance graphic designer in Columbus, Ohio.<\/p>\n

Nick Schwartz \u201998<\/a> is co-owner and Director of the Cider Creek Collective<\/a> in California, a community of artists offering classes, workshops and residencies, and devoted largely to ceramics.<\/p>\n

Garvin Sealy \u201902 <\/a>earned his MFA at the School for American Crafts at the Rochester Institute of Technology, and he is now a member of Applied Arts<\/a> in Scotland.<\/p>\n

Ward Shelley ’72<\/a> is a sculptor and performance artist whose work has been exhibited in ten countries, has often been featured in Art in America and Artforum, and is represented in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and other major museums. In 2014 he did a collaborative performance with artist Alex Schweder titled In Orbit<\/a>, in which they lived in a very large hamster wheel for ten days. Joseph Skinner ’14<\/a> earned his MFA in Studio Arts at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi, and he is now an instructor at Eckerd, teaching printmaking and drawing.<\/p>\n

Steve Smith \u201974 (MFA, University of Florida) has examples of his Artistamps included in the Moscow Artistamp Collection, and the Gina Lotta Post Online Artistamp Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Michael Specht \u201911<\/a> worked for 11 years with Apple in Silicon Valley as a Camera Image Quality Engineer, helping develop iPhone computational imaging technology.\u00a0 He is currently a Product Manager and Golden Eye for Google\u2019s Pixel Camera, working to develop the most authentic and equitable cameras using the latest AI technology.\u00a0 He also continues to make his own photography<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Melanie Taylor \u201974<\/a> (M. Arch., Yale) is an architect in New Haven, Connecticut. She was one of the first architects to participate in building the planned community of Seaside, Florida, designing Rosewalk<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Carrie Hall Tomberlin \u201900<\/a> (MFA, Clemson) is now Gallery Director and Lecturer at the University of North Carolina in Asheville.<\/p>\n

Lindsey Turowski ’06<\/a> is the principal of marketing and design at LD Creative in Newport, Rhode Island.<\/p>\n

Mila Kollock Turtle \u201990 is the owner of her own graphic design firm in St. Petersburg, Turtle Moon Graphics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Jorge Vidal \u201989<\/a> is now the CEO of Florida CraftArt<\/a> in St Petersburg, after having worked for years on the staff of the Museum of FIne Arts.<\/p>\n

Hallie Rae Ward ’12<\/a> is the owner of HRW Art+Designs in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n

Carey West \u201998<\/a> is a ceramic artist who teaches in the Independent School District in Austin, Texas.<\/p>\n

Tiffany Willey \u201906<\/a> has been an exhibit designer for Gallagher and Associates in New York, and is now Exhibit Creative Lead for Art Processors.<\/p>\n

Jordan Wood ’19<\/a> earned her MFA from the Maine College of Art and Design, and is now teaching at Creative Portland.<\/p>\n

Mary Yates \u201991<\/a> earned her MA in Photography and Digital Media at the University of Louisville, and she has taught photography for Spalding University.\u00a0 She is now Creative Director for SANS Institute<\/a>, and also a DJ on WXOX radio<\/a> in Louisville, every Friday at 3:00pm.<\/p>\n
