Eckerd's Waterfront Program, one of the largest collegiate watersports programs in the southeastern U. S., is one of the most exciting recreational opportunities on the campus. The facilities, located on Frenchman's Creek, include the Wallace Boathouse, an Activities Center, multiple docks and a boat ramp. Additional resources available are a fleet of sailboats, canoes, sea kayaks, sailboards, and multiple power boats used for water skiing, fishing, special trips, etc.. A unique feature of the Waterfront is the Eckerd community members' ability to use the facilities without membership in a club or organization. There are, however, two teams sponsored by the Waterfront for those interested. The Triton varsity sailing team participates in sloop, dinghy and single-hand competitions as a member of SAISA (the South Atlantic Intercollegiate Sailing Association) and the ICSA (Intercollegiate Sailing Association). One of the most unique student organizations on campus is Eckerd College Search and Rescue (EC-SAR), which is a highly trained group of students who provide maritime search and rescue services to the Tampa Bay boating community. This program is unique to Eckerd College.
The Waterfront offers a wide range of instruction for members of the Eckerd community as well as participants from the general public. Sailing (beginning to advanced levels) and Boardsailing classes are offered during the academic year. During the summer months, a Watersports Camp is held for children and teens. Classes include kayaking, boardsailing, wakeboarding, water skiing, saltwater fishing, exploring marine life, and multiple levels of sailing instruction.
Today the Waterfront Program is an important part of Eckerd College and remains true to its founding principle: "Education through Service." While providing a reprieve from the rigors of the classroom, the Waterfront Program also provides students with an added extracurricular dimension -- a chance to learn lifetime sports and make valuable contributions to the community.
