Eckerd College Alumnus Carlos Barbas '85 Recognized for Excellence in Organic Chemistry
Eckerd College Chemistry and Physics graduate Carlos Barbas III '85 recently received an Arthur C. Cope Scholar Award from the American Chemical Society. He won the award "for exceptional creativity and pioneering studies in organic chemistry, particularly in the areas of organocatalysis and the application of organic chemistry to chemical biology" (Chemical & Engineering News, March 9, 2009). Dr. Barbas has held the Janet & W. Keith Kellogg II Chair as Professor in the departments of Molecular Biology and Chemistry at Scripps Research Institute in San Diego, California for the past ten years.
