Eckerd College Breaks Ground for GO Pavilion
The College celebrated the impending construction of the GO Pavilion with a groundbreaking ceremony on Friday, May 21, highlighting the generosity of Eckerd College Trustee George Off and his wife, Tara.
"The GO Pavilion - named with George's initials - will take advantage of Florida's year round outdoor living climate and offer nearly 10,000 square-feet of open-air space for our students, faculty, staff and visitors to enjoy sports, concerts and events," said Eckerd President Dr. Donald R. Eastman III to the groundbreaking ceremony guests. "This event today is just the start of the celebrations that will occur because of and within this great facility."
The facility's tensile-fabric structure will shield users from the intense Florida sun, while taking greatest advantage of the mild tropical climate. A venue for intramural and club sports, festivals and other community-building events, the GO Pavilion will be a catalyst to foster personal development and positive attitudes through innovative recreational and educational programs. The facility will be located adjacent to the Bullard Tennis Courts near the College's soccer field.
Among the guests at the event were the architectural and construction teams, members of the College's Board of Trustees, College administrators, faculty, and students.
"Students are the most energizing part of Eckerdů my every encounter with students has always been uplifting," said Mr. Off. "Tara thought of the name, the GO Pavilion, and we hope it will fit well with a place that has become unstoppable. Tara and I are proud to be a part of this College."
Mr. Off, who lives in Pennsylvania and Colorado, was elected to the Eckerd College Board of Trustees in 1998 and currently serves as the chair of the Board's Buildings and Grounds Committee, which is currently interviewing architectural firms to work on the Center for Molecular and Life Sciences.
The GO Pavilion and the Science facility are initiatives of Many Experiences, One Spirit: The Campaign for Eckerd College. Donors have made gifts and pledges to the Campaign totaling $73 million toward the $80 million goal.
