Basketball Tournament Action
MELBOURNE, FL - Eckerd College, seeded No. 2 in he men's division of the Sunshine State Conference, had to pull out all stops to hold off No. 8 seed Saint Leo University here Friday afternoon in the opening round of the league basketball tournament by an 84-76
The Tritons advance to Saturday's semifinal game at 12:30 p.m., against the winner of the Lynn University/Florida Southern College game.
The Tritons, now 21-6 on the year, were led by guard Dwayne Smith, a first-team All-Conference performer. Smith poured in 27 points and was helped out by 17 points by Cerwin Thompson and 16 by Sharrod McCree. Saint Leo, which finished the season with an 8-19 record, was led by John Stolard with 26 points and Frank Craig with 17 and Matt Pruitt with 14.
The Lions trailed 79-72 with 40 seconds left and had the ball, but turned it over and McCree made two free throws four seconds later to up Eckerd's lead to eight points and school was out.
ECKERD 58, LYNN 52
MELBOURNE, FL--Felecia Felton score 22 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Eckerd College women's basketball team (14-13) to a 58-52 victory over Lynn University (15-12) in the opening round of the Sunshine State Conference Tournament. Andrea Patterson added 15 points for the Tritons. Michele Newman had 14 points to lead Lynn.
With the game tied 14-14, Katelyn Berger hit a basket to give the Tritons the lead they would never relinquish. They led by as many as 11 points in the half and held a 34-25 halftime edge.
Felton and Patterson led the way as the Tritons increased their lead to 15 points at 49-34 with 10:49 remaining. Lynn responded with a 12-12 run to cut the lead to three points at 51-48 with 3:23 remaining. Felton scored six straight points as the Tritons sealed the game with a 6-0 run.
Eckerd will advance to the simifinals where they will face host Florida Tech.
SUNSHINE STATE CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT
FLORIDA SOUTHERN 77, ECKERD 71
MELBOURNE, Fla.--Third-seeded Florida Southern(20-8)edged #2 Eckerd (21-7) 77-71 in men's semi-final action at the Sunshine State Conference basketball
tournament at Florida Tech's Clemente Center.
The Moccasins advance to Sunday's 1 p.m. championship game against the winner of Tampa vs. Rollins.
Cedric Powell led five Moccasin players in double figure scoring with 17 points while Matt Story added 14, Jean-Noel Leuly made 13, Christophe Humbert 12 and
Derek Heard had 11 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
Eckerd was paced by Dwayne Smith's game-high 21 points and Cerwin Thompson made a game-high 14 boards. Eckerd stayed in contention, shooting 89 percent from the
line (23-26), but shot only 38 percent from the field.
The Mocs led 46-34 at halftime and fought off a surging Triton rally capped by Smith's three-pointer at 51 seconds which pulled Eckerd within 75-71.
