First Presbyterian Church Hosts Eckerd College Sunday for Eckerd's 50th Anniversary
In honor of Eckerd College's founding as Florida Presbyterian College, Interim Pastor Reverend Larry Duncan and the parishioners of First Presbyterian Church welcomed Eckerd President Donald R. Eastman III, College faculty, staff and students for "Eckerd College Sunday" at their 11:00 a.m. worship service on Sunday, February 17, 2008.
Eckerd College was well represented at First Presbyterian and weaved throughout the services of the day. Eckerd Chaplain and Director of Religious Life Mona Bagasao gave the sermon at the 9:00 a.m. Praise Service and led the "Time with Children" portion at the 11:00 worship service. Seth Hagler '07, who is currently serving as the Campus Ministry Intern, was the liturgist and read passages from the Gospel of Matthew prior to President Eastman's talk. Scott Rivinius '88, a First Presbyterian Elder and the 2007 recipient of Eckerd's Staff Member of the Year Award, shared a moving excerpt from a thank-you letter of a First Presbyterian of St. Petersburg Church and Campus Scholarship recipient, senior Mary-Ann Ramdass, who was introduced at the service. David Irwin, clarinetist and Director of Eckerd's Community Bands, performed Mozart's "Adagio" from Clarinet Concerto, K. 622, during the offertory. The highlight of the service was President Eastman's address to the congregation. Click here to read President Eastman's remarks, "Bright Wings"
The idea for a Presbyterian college in Florida was originated by Hunter Blakely, a national leader in the Presbyterian Church. With founding President Bill Kadel, founding Dean of Faculty Jack Bevan and a small group of other early College leaders, that idea blossomed to form the spirit of Florida Presbyterian College. Their values and approach to academics, including the innovative 4-1-4 calendar, remain a vital part of the Eckerd experience.
