Eckerd College is another significant step closer to successfully concluding the decennial process reaffirming its accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) Commission on Colleges. The SACS on-site visiting committee responsible for evaluating the College visited campus November 9 and 10, 2010. SACS committee members met with trustees, faculty, staff and students and examined documentation verifying that the College is in compliance with over 70 standards.
Following the visit, Dr. Donald R. Eastman III, President of Eckerd College, shared this campuswide communication:
It gives me great pleasure to announce that the SACS visiting team has given Eckerd College what is in effect an A+ grade for our reaffirmation of accreditation. Receiving a 'clean sheet' for these ten-year reviews is exceedingly rare and, indeed, our SACS liaison said it was the first one in her experience.
I am exceedingly grateful to so many of you who have worked so hard for so long to make this day possible. Clearly, the leadership of Dean Emeritus Lloyd Chapin and Dean Betty Stewart, and that of Associate Deans Suzan Harrison and Kathy Watson has been simply superior. So many others, too numerous to name here, have contributed selflessly to make this day and this result possible.
This is a great day for Eckerd College. Congratulations to you all.
In its oral exit report with College leadership the morning of November 11, 2010, the SACS Committee Chair reported the Committee has no recommendations for the College and it accepts the College's Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP) on reflective service-learning. This means Eckerd College meets all SACS core requirements, comprehensive standards and QEP requirements.
The College leadership was told that few colleges receive evaluations with no recommendations. Committee members congratulated President Eastman and his leadership team. In turn, President Eastman thanked the SACS on-site visiting committee, and especially its Chair, Dr. William Pollard, vice president and dean of the college at Transylvania University, and Dr. Marsal P. Stoll, SACS vice president and liaison to Eckerd College.
Next Steps in the Decennial Accreditation Reaffirmation Process
SACS will complete the reaffirmation process in summer 2011. In accordance with SACS procedures, Committees on Compliance & Reports (C & R) review reports prepared by evaluation committees and the institutional responses to those reports. The C & R Committees' recommendation regarding an institution's reaffirmation of accreditation are forwarded to the Executive Council for review. The Executive Council recommends action to the full Board of Trustees which makes the final decision on reaffirmation and any monitoring activities that it requires of an institution. The full board convenes twice a year. The SACS Commission on Colleges Board of Trustees will vote formally on Eckerd College's reaffirmation of accreditation at its summer meeting in June 2011.
This successful outcome is the result of efforts made by every member of the Eckerd College community over a number of years. It is a tribute to the quality of the Eckerd educational experience in and out of the classroom and the shared governance and management of the institution.
