Eckerd College Is Highest Ranking Baccalaureate School in Florida for Students Studying Abroad

posted on 11/23/2010

According to the Institute of International Education's Open Doors 2010 Report on International Educational Exchange, Eckerd College ranks #27 among the top 40 baccalaureate institutions by undergraduate participation (68.5%), #16 among the top 40 baccalaureate institutions sending total number of students to study abroad (377), and #10 among baccalaureate institutions sending students to study abroad for a short-term duration (265). Eckerd College is the only Florida baccalaureate institution on all three lists.

The Open Doors report is published by the Institute of International Education (IIE), the leading not-for-profit educational and cultural exchange organization in the United States. Data is collected from a survey of approximately 3,000 accredited U.S. institutions. The study abroad data in Open Doors 2010 reflect study conducted abroad in academic year 2008-09.

"Eckerd College has a strong tradition of study abroad," said Dr. Donald R. Eastman III, President of Eckerd College. "The international dimension and perspective are vital to all of the College's academic and extracurricular programs."

Eckerd provides semester, full year, winter term, and spring-into-summer programs for student participation. More than 280 Eckerd students will travel on 21 trips during the January 2011 Winter Term for language study, cultural immersion, research, and service-learning. Destinations include Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, Tanzania, the Galapagos Islands, Suriname, and India.

Eckerd's Office of International Education and Off-Campus Programs plays a major role in working with faculty to arrange short-and long-term trips and make study abroad opportunities available to as many Eckerd students as possible.

"The learning gained from the international experience provides an excellent foundation for leadership skills and the service orientation necessary for success in today's world," said Diane Ferris, Director of International Education.

In 2003, a NAFSA: Association of International Educators study reported in The Chronicle of Higher Education that Eckerd College was ranked the #1 U.S. baccalaureate institution with the highest proportion of students who study abroad during their undergraduate career. At that time, nearly 60% of Eckerd students studied abroad - many more than once.

Study Abroad at Eckerd College
Since its inception, Eckerd College has provided study abroad opportunities for its students. This commitment to study abroad is expressed in the College's mission and, in 1960, the academic calendar was specifically designed to create a time for students to study a single topic. This four-one-four calendar became a model for other institutions throughout the country.

At the heart of the Eckerd College study abroad program is the London Study Centre. Since 1970, when Eckerd College leased a 200-year-old Georgian row house on Gower Street, more than 1,500 students have called the Centre home. For many in the Eckerd community, the London house has become the symbol of Eckerd College abroad.
