Lady Tritons Compete in ICSA Sperry Top-Sider Women's National Championship
By Zack Marks, Head Sailing Coach
This past May, the Triton sailors competed in the ICSA Sperry Top-Sider Women's National Championship held at Austin Yacht Club in Texas.
The Lady Tritons made it to the Semi-Final championship by finishing second in their SAISA district qualifier held at Clemson University earlier in the spring. The Tritons then had to finish in the top nine of the Semi-Final Championship held in Austin May 30-31. After fighting for two days the Tritons made the cut and finished a close ninth.
There was no rest for the sailors as the Nationals Championship commenced immediately afterwards. The conditions on manmade Lake Travis reminded the sailors of Eckerd - the air was hot, the water was warm and flat, and the breeze was shifty, much like Eckerd's home waters of Boca Ciega Bay. The sailors, however, did not find their stride and after two days were in fourteenth place.
For the final day of the championship the Tritons declared it "Moving Day." Asserting their strong desire to move up the results they sailed better than the previous two days and at one point moved all the way up to 9th before eventually finishing the regatta in 11th place. Overall, the Tritons were proud of their performance and are looking forward to crack the top ten next year.
