Public Invited to Grand Opening of James Center for Molecular and Life Sciences at Eckerd College
Eckerd College invites the community to join Eckerd faculty, staff and students, Tom and Mary James, elected officials and our St. Petersburg neighbors for the Grand Opening of the James Center for Molecular and Life Sciences on Thursday, January 31, 2013 from 3:00 to 5:30 p.m. Complimentary 'science fare' and 'aqueous solutions' will be served at this family-friendly event. Eckerd College is located at 4200 54th Avenue South in St. Petersburg.
The James Center for Molecular and Life Sciences, named for longtime Eckerd friends Tom James, executive chairman of Raymond James Financial, Inc., and his wife, Mary, is a $25 million, 55,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility housing biology, chemistry and biochemistry programs, as well as new academic initiatives that explore developments at the chemistry-biology interface. Equipped with the latest in eco-conscious innovations, educational technology and scientific instrumentation, the James Center will advance our efforts to prepare tomorrow’s leaders in the sciences, and will quickly become the hub of the Natural Sciences at Eckerd College.
The afternoon program consists of a ribbon cutting ceremony, an open house with building tours and interactive laboratories, and live music by The Lotus Fire. Science fare menu items include: Beaker Cookies, Exploded Corn Kernels, Fruit Molecules, Noncrystalline Sugar Floss, Periodic Table of Elements Cake, Powdered Brain Cakes, Salted DNA Twists and Test Tube Dogs. Aqueous solutions (coffee, tea, hot chocolate, water and assorted sodas) will be available.
Parking is free. Guests visiting Eckerd College for the James Center Grand Opening may park in the North Lot. Upon entering campus, take a right at the traffic circle then the next immediate right. Want more science? The public is also invited to the Fourth Annual Eckerd College Science Symposium on Saturday, February 9, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The daylong symposium will feature research, lectures, posters and more by Eckerd alumni, faculty and students.
