The Current is Named Best College Newspaper and Website by Society for Professional Journalists
The Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) has honored Eckerd's student newspaper, The Current, with 2012 Mark of Excellence Awards for Best College Newspaper and Best College Website for small schools in the Southeast. The Mark of Excellence Awards recognize the best of collegiate journalism from a calendar year. The Current's website placed third in last year's competition.
Region 3 of SPJ comprises Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina. The small schools catgeory consists of schools and universities with undergraduate and graduate enrollments of fewer than 5,000 students. The Current will advance to the nationals for competition against eleven regional winners. National winners will be announced May 2.
Congratulations are also in order for these individual first place winners who advance to the national contest: Ely Grinfeld '13, Max Martinez '12, Seth Ravid '13, Malena Carollo '13, Kelly Coston '13 and Dominick Cuppetilli '15. Students receiving additional individual awards are: Elizabeth Tomaselli '13, Cait Duffy '13 and Lincoln Andres-Beck '12.
The Current is the daily student-run news organization of Eckerd College. It produces daily web exclusives on its companion website as well as a free bi-weekly print newspaper. In 2011, the Florida College Press Association named The Current Best College Newspaper.
