Dr. Suzan Harrison '78 Appointed Dean of Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Eckerd College
Eckerd President Dr. Donald R. Eastman III announced Tuesday the appointment of Professor Suzan Harrison, a 1978 alumna of the College, as the new Dean of Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Eckerd College.
"Suzan is an award-winning teacher, a literary scholar of considerable accomplishment, a visionary administrator capable of consensus-building, and a diligent and thoughtful colleague who is known for strong advocacy of academic programs and values," said Dr. Eastman. "I have full confidence in her ability to apply her intellectual and personal gifts to advance Eckerd College in her new role."
Dean Harrison is the first Eckerd College graduate and second woman to be appointed Dean of Faculty and Vice President for Academic Affairs in the College's history.
She joined Eckerd's faculty in 1989. During her tenure as a Professor of Rhetoric she has chaired the Letters and Foundations Collegia, and has served as Associate Dean of Faculty, covering a variety of responsibilities, most recently, leading the College's efforts to reaffirm accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Universities. Associate Dean Harrison was appointed Acting Dean of Faculty in June 2012. She assumed the considerable duties of the Dean's role in addition to her ongoing work leading the process for revising Eckerd's general education program.
Dean Harrison received a Bachelor's degree in literature with honors from Eckerd and Master's and Doctorate degrees in English from Florida State University and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, respectively. She has received Eckerd's Robert A. Staub Distinguished Teacher Award, was inducted into Eckerd's Phi Beta Kappa Zeta of Florida chapter, and was recognized with the Phoenix Award for Distinguished Achievement in Eudora Welty Scholarship by the Eudora Welty Society. Dean Harrison authored Eudora Welty and Virginia Woolf: Gender, Genre and Influence (Louisiana State University Press, 1997), and has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals and essay collections.
"I believe that our faculty and our students are best served when research and scholarship are supported, when faculty professional development is encouraged and nurtured, allowing individual professors to bring into the classroom the intellectual passion and excitement that attracted us to this profession in the first place," said Dean Harrison. "As Dean of Faculty, I embrace a collaborative model of leadership and see my role as an opportunity to work with the faculty of Eckerd College to develop and nurture the academic program and to create a vibrant and engaged intellectual community."
Dean Suzan Harrison is the fifth dean of Eckerd College, which was founded in 1958 as Florida Presbyterian College.
