26 Eckerd Students Selected for Phi Beta Kappa Membership
The Eckerd College Phi Beta Kappa chapter, Zeta of Florida, has selected twenty-six students for membership for the 2012-2013 academic year. Founded in 1776, Phi Beta Kappa is the nation's oldest and most widely known society for recognition of academic excellence and scholarly achievement.
Election to membership in Phi Beta Kappa is one of the highest honors that an undergraduate student may earn and is typically conferred upon fewer than ten percent of each graduating class. Students do not apply for membership but are selected during the spring semester each year by the Phi Beta Kappa chapter as a whole, after a careful review of the academic records of each eligible candidate. While members are generally elected in their senior year, the chapter may elect deserving juniors as well.
*Twenty-one seniors and five juniors represent the 2012-13 membership class. The students will be formally announced at the annual induction ceremony on Thursday, May 16 from 5-7 p.m. in Fox Hall.

About Phi Beta Kappa, Zeta of Florida
In August 2003, Eckerd College became the first institution of higher learning on the West Coast of Florida to be awarded a chapter by the Phi Beta Kappa Society. Phi Beta Kappa Chapters are awarded only to those national institutions of higher education that provide the highest level of academic and intellectual quality in their educational programs for undergraduate students. The Society's mission is to promote the liberal arts and sciences, to recognize academic excellence, and to foster freedom of thought and expression. Zeta of Florida is one of only 280 such chapters in the nation.
