Eckerd College Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Team Qualifies for National Competition
For the twelfth year, the Eckerd College Students In Free Enterprise (SIFE) team has received a Championship award in its league after participating in the 2010 SIFE USA Regional Competition in Atlanta earlier this month. The 5-member team, led by Naveen Malthora, the Tom and Mary James Professor of Finance, will go on to compete in the National Competition to be held in Minneapolis May 11 to 14.
Students in Free Enterprise encourages students to take what they are learning in the classroom and apply it to real-life situations, and to use their knowledge to better their communities through educational outreach projects. The Eckerd College SIFE team was represented by a combination of residential and Program for Experienced Learners students: Loren Anderson, Karen Epting, Ricardo Nascimento, Dawn Steighner, and Jo-Anne Swensson. The eleven projects presented by the Eckerd College SIFE Team included Project Pro$per, Do You Kiss, Bow or Shake Hands?, Reviving the American Dream: The Sugar Loaf Emporium, What's Your Education Worth?, and Welcome to Adulthood.
Teams were judged on the effectiveness of their projects during a 24-minute presentation and were evaluated on creativity and innovation, results of education programs, success in utilizing resources and documentation of activities. The projects were judged by business leaders from from companies such as Sam's Club, Proctor and Gamble, Sealed Air, and AFLAC. Following the competition, the students were invited to a private reception hosted by Sam's Club to discuss networking and job opportunities.
In one of the largest collegiate competitions in the country, SIFE teams from more than 400 campuses compete based on which of them had the most impact improving people's lives. The Eckerd College SIFE team competed among nine leagues representing campuses throughout the Southeastern U.S. At the May competition in Minneapolis, one team will win the honor of being named a national champion and represent the U.S. at the 2010 SIFE World Cup in Los Angeles.

Dr. Naveen K. Malhotra serves as advisor for the Eckerd College SIFE Team. Dr. Malhotra was named a Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellow in recognition of his leadership and support of the SIFE program at Eckerd College. Last April, the City of St. Petersburg honored Dr. Malhotra with a key to the city and the Eckerd College SIFE team as Sunshine Ambassadors. In February 2007, he was appointed as the first occupant of the Tom and Mary James Professorship in Finance.
