Nearly 250 Eckerd College students will make a quick stop on campus this weekend before heading off with their faculty leaders to 17 international destinations for Winter Term 2014, which begins Monday, January 6, 2014. Students taking the Winter Term course at Eckerd’s London Study Centre already are on their way to meet their classmates and faculty leader at the 200-year-old Georgian row house on Gower Street that the College has leased since 1970.

Among the Winter Term 2014 international destinations are a trip to the Galapagos Islands and Ecuador where students and their faculty leader will camp in the Amazon rain forest, hike through the highland cloud forest, and spend a week snorkeling and exploring the Islands. Other students will head to Morocco for Arabic language immersion and a chance to experience its historical monuments, shrines and markets. Still others will visit a village in a mountainous region of Cameroon, where they will volunteer alongside an Eckerd College graduate who is in the Peace Corps and currently working with communities on environmental and water projects.

Winter Term is an Eckerd hallmark. While hundreds of liberal arts colleges now have a January term, Eckerd was the first to institute it. Originally envisioned as a time for intensive study of a single subject, creative group work and independent studies, Winter Term has since become the most popular time for students to study abroad. Today, students can choose from approximately 20 off-campus destinations to spend a Winter Term designed and led by Eckerd faculty.
