What is a large pet?

Cats, dogs (under 40 pounds), rabbits, large birds, ferrets, and chinchillas are considered large, and must be properly registered with the Pet Life Staff before residing on campus. The acquisition of a dog or cat, purchased, fostered, adopted, or stray, while a student at Eckerd, is prohibited. Large pets are only allowed in designated large pet houses.

What is a small pet?

Fish, small birds, hamsters, gerbils, guinea pigs, rats, amphibians, and reptiles are considered small pets and must be properly registered. Small pets are permitted in all complexes. A student may have no more than two small pets.

How old must my cat or dog be to live on campus?

Your dog must be at least one year old and have lived with the student or student’s family for at least ten months. Your cat must be at least six months old and have lived with the student or student’s family for at least three months.

What is the weight limit of my cat or dog living on campus?

Forty pounds is the maximum weight allowed for a cat or dog on campus.

Does my cat or dog need to be on a leash?

Cats and dogs must be on a leash connected to a human handler at all times while on campus, excluding the Pet Park.

Can I bring a Pet as a first-year/transfer student to campus?

First-year and transfer students may bring Small Pets at any time and Small Pets may reside with students in any residence hall. First-year and transfer student may bring Large Pets after living on the Eckerd College campus for one semester, provided that their Large Pet meets the requirements stated within this policy. These students must reside in a designated Large Pet house and will be required to properly register with Pet Life.

Does my cat, dog, or rabbit have to be spayed or neutered?

Your cat, dog, or rabbit must be spayed or neutered at the time of registration and veterinarian certification is required.

Are there any dog breeds not allowed on campus?

No. All breeds are allowed on campus, however, the dog must meet the requirements outlined in the Pet Policy in order to reside on campus. No animal may exhibit any aggressive behavior towards humans or other pets pets.

How much does it cost to register a pet on campus?

The cost for a Large Pet is $200 for the academic year. There is a $50 fee to register a Small Pet, which covers up to two small animals.

Can a friend bring a pet to campus to visit?

Yes, a Visiting Pet Registration form must be completed one week prior to the pet’s arrival and confirmation must be received from Pet Life.

When I bring my pet to campus how long do I have to register?

You must register your pet prior to your arrival to campus. After registering, Pet Life Staff will review your registration and other documentation and will inform you whether or not your registration was approved.

How many large or small pets can I have on campus?

One large pet or two small pets per owner are permitted on campus.
